Boils

Boils are painful pus-filled infections around hair follicles. Heat, sweating, friction, shaving and diabetes can contribute. Recurrent boils need more than repeated painkillers or squeezing at home.

Symptoms & signs

Boils may present as:

  • Painful red swelling with pus or a central point
  • Recurrent bumps in armpits, groin, thighs, buttocks or beard area
  • Fever, spreading redness or increasing pain
  • Marks or scars after healing

What Dr. Maharania checks

  • Whether it is a boil, abscess, folliculitis, hidradenitis or an infected cyst.
  • Size, depth, fever, spreading redness and whether referral for drainage is needed.
  • Recurrence pattern and whether sugar testing or culture is useful.

Treatment approach

Small boils may settle with local care and medicines. Larger abscesses may need drainage at an appropriate centre, so Dr. Maharania refers promptly when that is needed. Recurrent boils require checking hygiene, friction, shaving, bacterial carriage and diabetes risk when appropriate. Squeezing can worsen spread and scarring.

What to expect

1

Assess severity

Size, pain, fever and surrounding redness decide urgency.

2

Refer when drainage is needed

Some collections need drainage at an appropriate centre; others do not. This is decided clinically.

3

Treat recurrence

Repeated boils need cause review, not just repeated antibiotics.

4

Prevent spread

Hygiene, wound care and avoiding squeezing are part of treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Should I squeeze a boil?
No. Squeezing can push infection deeper, spread bacteria and increase scarring.
When is referral for drainage needed?
When pus is collected and not settling, drainage may be needed at an appropriate centre. A doctor should decide this after examination.
Why do boils keep coming?
Friction, sweating, shaving, bacterial carriage and diabetes can contribute. Recurrent cases need review.
When is it urgent?
Fever, fast spread, severe pain, face/spine location, diabetes or a large abscess needs prompt care.
