Skin condition

Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

Eczema causes itchy, dry or inflamed skin that tends to come back. In Jaipur, sweating, dust, harsh soaps, sanitizers, wool/synthetic clothing and frequent product changes can aggravate it. The aim is to calm the flare and reduce recurrence.

Symptoms & signs

Eczema commonly causes:

  • Dry, itchy patches that come and go
  • Red, dark or thickened skin from scratching
  • Rashes in elbow/knee folds, hands, neck or face
  • Oozing, crusting or pain when infection is added

What Dr. Maharania checks

  • Whether it is eczema, fungal infection, psoriasis, scabies or contact allergy.
  • Triggers such as soaps, detergents, cosmetics, occupation and sweating.
  • Signs of infection and whether medicines used earlier were too strong or too weak.

Treatment approach

Treatment combines trigger control, moisturising and the right anti-inflammatory medicine for the right duration. Steroids are not automatically bad, but wrong strength, wrong site or unsupervised long use causes problems. Infection or allergy may need additional treatment.

What to expect

1

Confirm the diagnosis

Many itchy rashes mimic eczema, especially fungal infection and scabies.

2

Calm the flare safely

Medicine strength is matched to site, age and severity.

3

Repair the skin barrier

Moisturiser, bathing habits and irritant avoidance are part of treatment.

4

Prevent recurrence

Triggers are reviewed instead of only repeating the same cream.

Frequently asked questions

Is eczema an allergy?
Sometimes allergy contributes, but eczema is often a skin-barrier and inflammation problem with multiple triggers.
Are steroid creams unsafe?
They are useful when chosen correctly. Problems happen with unsupervised, wrong-strength or long-term use.
Do I need allergy tests?
Only selected patients do. History and pattern decide whether testing may help.
When should I visit urgently?
Come in if there is oozing, pain, fever, rapidly spreading rash, face/eye involvement or poor sleep from itching.
