Skin infection

Tinea Pedis (Athlete's Foot)

Tinea pedis affects the feet, usually between toes or on the soles. In Jaipur weather, closed shoes, sweating and damp socks make it worse. It can also spread to nails or hands if ignored.

Symptoms & signs

Patients commonly notice:

  • Itching, peeling or white soggy skin between toes
  • Cracks, burning or pain while walking
  • Scaling on soles or sides of feet
  • Associated thick or discoloured toenails

What Dr. Maharania checks

  • Whether the foot rash is fungal infection, eczema, psoriasis or shoe allergy.
  • Nail involvement, recurrent infection and footwear/sweating pattern.
  • Whether sugar testing is relevant in recurrent or severe infections.

Treatment approach

Treatment usually combines antifungal medicine with keeping feet dry. Cracks or secondary bacterial infection may need additional care. Nail involvement needs longer treatment and should not be assumed without examination.

What to expect

1

Examine feet and nails

Toe spaces, soles, nails and sometimes hands are checked together.

2

Treat skin first

Antifungal treatment is used for the right duration, not just until itching stops.

3

Correct daily habits

Drying toe spaces, changing socks and rotating footwear reduce recurrence.

4

Check complications

Pain, pus, swelling or diabetes risk needs closer attention.

Frequently asked questions

Is athlete foot contagious?
Yes, it can spread through damp floors, towels, footwear and scratching. Hygiene matters along with medicine.
Can foot fungus affect nails?
Yes. Nail fungus needs longer treatment, so the nails are checked instead of treating only the skin.
When should I come to the clinic?
Come in if there are cracks, pain, pus, swelling, diabetes, recurrent infection or thick nails.
Will it clear permanently?
It can clear, but recurrence is common if sweating, footwear and incomplete treatment are not addressed.
